Analysis: The Deconstruction in My Dad Picture Book by Anthony Browne

Hello, everyone.

What is your favorite book or comic? For me, it’s The Avenger: Infinity War: The Cosmic Quest, Vol. 2: Aftermath. This comic is brilliant with unpredictable plot twist that amazed me throughout the story. Thanos is very cruel villain, but on the other side, some people think he is a hero because what he does is right, the universe needs balance. So, what does hero actually mean? In Merriam Webster dictionary, hero is a person who is admired for great or brave act or fine qualities.

At present, I won’t  talk about Thanos or The Avenger. I will discuss about the deconstruction in My Dad picture book by Anthony Browne. According to Jacques Derride, a reader’s or listener’s sense of the meaning of a word depends on the ability to separate it from all the things it does not mean. Consequently, any given word evokes and depends on meanings unlike or opposite to its own.

Anthony Browne made Dad as a hero for his son. In the child’s opinion, his dad isn’t afraid of anything, as strong as a gorilla, as happy as a hippopotamus, as big as a house, as soft as a teddy as wise as an owl, funny, and can do anything.

However, In the picture book above, his’s messy-pajama, his messy-hair, and his unshaven-beard interprets that Dad is exhausted and sleepy so that he drinks coffee to make him still awake.

When Dad is tried to make his son happy by making weird face, there are wrinkles on his face. In other word, he is not 'young' enough to do all these.

So we can conclude that Dad is a good father figure. He can be relied upon under any circumstances. However, he prioritizes happiness for his child over himself. Even though he feels tired, Dad acts as if he is still strong to make his son happy. He does it because if his child be happy, he also be happy.
